Consciousness in Business
What is the future of business? How will businesses learn to survive in the coming world? Which business are certain to vanish as society and the individual continue to evolve?
Of course, it is not at all clear that society is evolving, or that the individual in general is continuing to evolve. Personal evolution seems to be an important concern for less and less of humanity as time goes on. It may be equally arguable that humanity is caught up in a de-evolutionary process. Sharp turns in evolution are rare, and nearly impossible to prove scientifically, but are well accepted from the point of view of Eastern concepts of spirituality. From a Eastern perspective, we can fairly discuss either evolution or de-evolution of the individual or of society as a whole, in terms of biological evolution, psychological evolution, or spiritual evolution. Also, outside of the individual, we encounter forms of evolution or devolution in the supportive structures of existence in the human world, including societal evolution, organizational evolution, and evolution in institutionalized social structures such as marriage and family, education, business practices, government, and technology.
Therefore, when we speak directly to
the question of whether business as a social institution is in a process of evolution or
devolution, we are conscious of addressing that question only within a global conceptual
model in which these other forms of evolution or devolution are also kept in mind.
