Sacred
Sites: Martin Gray & Power Places Around the World
Oct. 5, 2000, Dallas, Texas
Review by Reg Humphreys, Ph.D.
The Oct. 5 slide show and
lecture was held on the campus of El Centro College, downtown campus of the Dallas County
Community College system. The presentation received limited publicity, and so I was
surprised to see even the 50 or 60 that did attend. The presenter was clear in his reports
of sold-out audiences in many places he has toured. However, of all the interested local
scholars that I know personally, none had heard of the lecture in advance, and I
recognized no one in the audience.
In spite of the apathetic turnout of the Dallas crowd, it would be hard to find a better
visual show, a more polished narrator, and a more meaningful message than were seen that
evening at El Centro College. Martin Gray has devoted his life to visiting more than 1200
locations of famous spiritual events from the religions of the world. Gray combines his
photographic images with his personal stories of pilgrimage, and descriptions of the
mysteries and traditions which surround the locations themselves, which he calls
"Power Places".
In a pop spirituality marketplace jammed to the point of bursting with false gurus,
teachers, and theologies, Gray's message stands out as a single rose among thorns, a true
altruistic island in a sea of commercialization. In honoring, studying, and amplifying
these "Power Places", he simultaneously honors the ancient theological models
from which such power may be drawn. Kudos to Gray for his one-of-a-kind content and
quality. Don't miss his lectures or workshops if they pass near you, and check out his
equally excellent web site and video.
